Cooler days are making it feel a little more like Christmas is on the way, leading one local agency to announce plans for its holiday assistance program.

AFL-CIO Community Services will start taking applications for its annual Adopt-A-Family Christmas Program on Monday, Oct. 28. The agency matches those in need with local donors each year so everyone can celebrate a happy holiday.

There are new guidelines this year to qualify for assistance. To receive help, applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria:

Having children under the age of 18 in the household

Actively receiving disability or Social Security benefits

Being older than 63

Those with questions about their qualification status should contact the agency before applying.

Applications to be adopted for Christmas will be available at the AFL-CIO office at 1203 N. Sixth St. and on the agency’s website www.helpmenow.org from Oct. 28 through Friday, Dec. 6. Applicants can complete the application by filling out a pamphlet or printing one from the website and returning it to the agency with a $2 processing fee or registering online and submitting a $3 processing fee.

Applications must be received no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 9, and children can’t be brought when dropping off materials for the program.

Agency staff will call applicants to complete their application, and some may be required to produce supporting documents based on necessity. Those who speak Spanish need to text Maria at 408-796-9512 to make an appointment; phone calls will not be answered.

The application process is not complete until families have heard back from agency staff.

Those who would like to adopt an individual or family for the holidays can stop by the AFL-CIO offices beginning Wednesday, Nov 13.
