Thanks to a donation from Triumph Foods this week, Second Harvest will be able to provide around 54,000 meals to the community.

Second Harvest posted on Facebook thanking the local food manufacturer for its generous donation of 28 pallets of protein.

The nonprofit provides about 6 million pounds of food every year to St. Joseph residents through several programs such as Backpack Buddies, No Hunger Summer and Senior Boxes.

Second Harvest CEO Chad Higdon said he believes this donation from Triumph will help provide food for these programs immensely.

“We know that (for) families struggling with food insecurity, one of the most expensive foods to provide for your family is lean proteins,” Higdon said. “So this is a great product that really helps with our distribution. It is really going to help provide great support for families in need.”

Over the years, Triumph Foods has donated roughly 75,000 pounds of product to the nonprofit, but this single donation has been one of the largest Second Harvest has received.

The two companies plan to expand their partnership in the future with continuous donations.

“We went down and just talked about our distribution network and the amount of families that we’re serving regularly through our mobile pantry distributions and agency partners and, you know, they indicated that there might be an opportunity to kind of expand and build on that partnership,” Higdon said. “So this is really the start of a great opportunity.”
