Mother of St. Joseph native Eminem dies

The mother of a well-known rapper born in St. Joseph has died.

Debbie Nelson, 69, died on Monday in St. Joseph, according to multiple news outlets. She is the mother of Marshall Bruce Mathers III, best known as Eminem.

A representative for the rapper confirmed to People Magazine on Tuesday that Nelson died due to complications from lung cancer. Another publication, TMZ Celebrity News was the first to report Nelson’s death around 7 a.m. on Tuesday morning. 

Nelson gave birth to her musician son while living in the St. Joseph area in 1972. She moved back and forth between St. Joseph and Michigan since then.
