One dead, multiple people shot at Chiefs rally

One person is dead and multiple people are injured after a shooting outside of Union Station at the Chiefs victory rally.

Kansas City radio station KKFI 90.1 FM posted on social media that one of its employees, Lisa Lopez, was killed in the shooting.
Police Chief Stacey Graves confirmed around 5:25 p.m. that the total number of gunshot victims is up to 22. Three people are detained in relation to today’s incident, and Graves said firearms have been recovered from the scene.
Fire Chief Ross Grundyson said that of the gunshot victims, eight of them were identified as having immediately life-threatening injuries and were transported within 10 minutes. Seven others had life-threatening injuries, and six people had minor injuries, according to Grundyson.
Children’s Mercy is treating 12 patients from the shooting, 11 of whom are children and nine are gunshot victims. Stephanie Meyer, senior vice president and chief nursing officer with the hospital spoke to the public around 6:30 and said all of the victims at Children’s Mercy are expected to recover and none are in critical condition. Patients were between ages 6 and 15.
Meyer said the one word she would use to describe the emotion of the children was “fear.”
Grundyson said around 5:30 p.m. that they do not have the ages of any patients, but that they did transport victims to Children’s Mercy, which accepts patients up to 17 years old.
A spokesperson with University Health Truman Medical Center said the hospital is treating 12 patients, eight of whom are gunshot victims, including two in critical conditions and six in stable condition. Other victims may be at other hospitals.
Graves spoke to the public at 3:30 p.m. and confirmed the one death at this time and said that police are still gathering information on the status of victims.
Mayor Quinton Lucas also spoke at the press conference and said he ran for safety after shots were fired.
Lucas and Graves said they were “angry” and “heartbroken” after the shooting.
The Chiefs released a statement on X expressing their sadness by the shooting.
“At this time, we have confirmed that all of our players, coaches staff and their families are safe and accounted for,” the Chiefs said in a statement.
Kansas City police confirmed on social media that shots were fired and multiple people were injured at the Chiefs rally just after 2 p.m. Wednesday.
“Shots were fired west of Union Station near the garage and multiple people were struck. We took two armed people into custody for more investigation,” police posted on X.
Police and military personnel were seen rushing inside of Union Station by a News-Press NOW reporter, and crowds are clearing out after an incident at the Chiefs victory rally.
