A former Maysville police chief is suing the city over his termination in a lawsuit filed on June 14.

The complaint, filed by James Baker and his attorney in DeKalb County, names the mayor, city council members and the city clerk as defendants.

It alleges that the city council did not follow procedure to get another law enforcement agency to investigate two complaints about Baker’s conduct before deciding to terminate him in May 2023 after nearly a year on the job.

Baker is suing for defamation, invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress and is asking for damages in excess of $25,000 for each of the three counts.
