See St. Joseph: Love for art, science and puppies

By Kendra Simpson
With the holiday quickly approaching, St. Joseph has found itself in puppy love with several Valentine’s Day — and anti-Valentine’s Day — events. Check all that out in this week’s edition of See St. Joseph.
Join the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art for an elegant evening of fine dining on Friday, Feb. 9, to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Luna’s will be serving a gourmet meal with not one, not two but three appetizers. Perhaps the most intriguing part of the evening will be the talk with the museum’s director, Eric Fuson, about local and famous artist couples who inspired one another. Doors open at 6 p.m. Friday, the art talk begins at 6:30 and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. To purchase tickets, visit the museum’s website at albrecht-kemper.org/events.
For many people, Valentine’s Day may be a bit less romantic and more of a nuisance. Downtown florist Unique Unicorn knows the feeling and created the perfect anti-Valentine activity. The Love Bites Terrarium Build invites all Valentines-Grinches to build a loving environment for carnivorous plants. For $35, the build will include a plastic terrarium, soil, substrate, moss, decor and carnivorous plants. This event will last from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Unique Unicorn, 618 Francis St.
Missouri Western is inviting lovers of all things science to Super Science Saturday. This annual event welcomes budding scientists of all ages to participate in exciting interactive experiments. There will be exhibits and demonstrations involving chemistry, physics, computers, nursing, reptiles, amphibians and the weather. News-Press NOW’s Storm Tracker team will be there to conduct a handful of weather-related experiments and demonstrations, including atmospheric thermodynamics, cloud development and even a small-scale tornado! We’ll also be answering any weather-related questions. The fun runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, in the Remington-Agenstein Hall on Missouri Western’s campus. To register for Super Science Saturday, visit the St. Joseph Museum’s website at www.stjosephmuseum.org/events.
Some may need a little extra affection this time of year, which is why Hazel’s Coffee and Brewing will be hosting Love, Cuddles and Lattes with the Pony Express Therapy Dogs. Community members are welcome to come pet and love on some therapy dogs for free. No purchase is necessary but Hazel’s encourages guests to bring canned food or non-perishable items to donate to the Second Harvest collection. The dogs will be on-site from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10.
Because of last year’s immense success in donations and puppy adoptions, Friends of the Animal Shelter is once again teaming up with River Bluff Brewing for its second annual Puppy Bowl. The tailgate will include hot dogs, raffles, face painting, craft beers and, of course, puppies. All proceeds will benefit Friends of the Animal Shelter to help community animals in need at the St. Joseph Animal Control and Rescue. The Puppy Bowl will go from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at River Bluff Brewing.
Kansas City’s Kurt Allen Band will be performing at Magoon’s Famous Delicatessen at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10. For more than a decade, Kurt Allen has been fusing gritty old-school blues, vintage soul, swampy Bayou funk and more into a relentless blues-rock machine. Over nine tracks, Allen flexes his guitar muscle in a way only hinted at on previous studio releases. Peppering the set with songs from his entire catalog and new and previously unrecorded tracks, “Live From The Red Shed” is an unfiltered testament to the power of live blues.
There’s quite a bit going on this weekend for everyone, whether you’re in love with a partner, plants or puppies.
