Cinco de Mayo is a time to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage in the United States and a great excuse to indulge in some delicious food and drinks.

Local food stands like Adrian’s Tacos ensured the popular celebrated holiday didn’t go overlooked in St. Joseph by offering a variety of Mexican cuisines outside of Hazel’s Coffee Shop Sunday morning.

“We’re serving tacos, nachos, quesadillas and all types of foods,” said Anabel Garcia, an employee at Adrian’s Tacos. “We’re just out here enjoying the nice weather and making sure we celebrate Cinco de Mayo in our area. It’s an important holiday with a lot of history.”

Cinco de Mayo marks the anniversary of the 1862 victory by Mexican troops over invading French forces at the Battle of Puebla.

Over the years, this victory has been celebrated with parades and festivals that include folkloric dancing and the promotion of Mexican food and music.

Garcia said she’s overjoyed by the amount of support community members show for the culture and holiday.

“We’ve had quite a bit of people stop by today,” she said. “We’ve been serving meals since early this morning and people seem to really enjoy the food we have to offer and want to know more about it. It’s so interesting having conversations about the holiday with different people because everyone may not know the history which is okay.”
