Library lectures focus on ancient astronomy

By NewsPress Now

A new four-part lecture series focusing on ancient astronomy kicks off next weekend at the St. Joseph Public Library.

Dr. Jay Lemanski hosts the talks, which begin with a 1 p.m. presentation Saturday, June 15 at the Downtown Branch, 927 Felix St., titled “How Do We Know? The Case of MUL.MUL.” The session explains how Assyriologists are able to identify what stars and planets the Sumerian or Akkadian names are referring to.

Other sessions will occur on June 29, July 13 and July 27. They will cover the circular astrolabe, the solar system seal and principles of divination.

Lemanski has a PhD in medieval history and a degree in Assyriology. He has studied Sumerian, Akkadian, philosophy and several foreign languages.

This programs are intended for adults.
