A local tourism effort is receiving recognition.

The Highway 36 Heritage Alliance was awarded the Innovator Award at the 2024 Missouri Governor’s Conference on Tourism recently. The award honors a small tourism organization or individual who achieves significant results on a modest budget.

St. Joseph is one of the founding destinations of the Highway 36 Heritage Alliance.

The group highlights what it calls “The Way of American Genius” and the tourism sites associated with it. Multiple communities along Highway 36 have ties to innovations and people that made significant impacts on American culture including the Pony Express, the invention of sliced bread, Walt Disney and Mark Twain.

Information about attractions along Highway 36 and the Highway 36 Heritage Alliance can be found at www.americangeniushighway.com. Highway 36 Visitors Guides are available at the St. Joseph Convention & Visitors Bureau.
