ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) -- The final push to reach the goal of $15 million for a public aquatic facility is on.

The YMCA is planning a Pedal for the Pool fundraiser to bring in some of the remaining money needed to build the facility at 3601 N. Village Drive.

"We've had so much support and this fundraiser, even though our goal is just $5,000, it's really about continuing to raise awareness of what we're doing," YMCA CEO Tammy Killin said. "We have swim team kiddos that are coming in the morning before school to ride just to show support."

Pedal for the Pool will run from 5:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday, April 14, and will take place in the YMCA lobby.

"I think we're planning between 10 to 15 bikes out there, but if we need to bring the whole classroom there, we will do it," Killin said.

Music will play during the event, and a coffee truck will also be there. Guests will ride for 30 minutes or until they have raised $150.

Killin said some riders will be riding for more than two hours, including one cycling instructor who has a goal of reaching 80 miles.

To sign up for the event, email twells@stjoymca.org or call the YMCA at 816-671-9622. Currently, the YMCA is about $1 million short of the goal.

"We're hitting around $14 million in commitments and this is crunch time," Killin said. "We have to get real serious about getting these pledges in for those commitments to be finalized so we can present that to the city."
