Season finale symphony performance set for April 19

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) -- Tickets are on sale for the Saint Joseph Symphony's final show of its 65th anniversary season.
The performance at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, at the Missouri Theater pairs composers Johann Sebastian Bach and Felix Mendelssohn. Although they lived in two different centuries, the men share a tie because in 1829, Mendelssohn organized and conducted what was thought to be the first performance of Bach's “St. Matthew's Passion” in 100 years.
“For all of Bach’s popularity in our time, he was not a superstar in his own,” said Nancy Schmidt-Brunson, managing director of the symphony. “After his death, his music was largely known mostly by intellectuals and professional musicians. Mendelssohn’s promotion of Bach’s music in concert brought his music back to the attention of a wide audience. The rest, as they say, is history.”
The concert will feature the symphony’s concertmaster Chun-Chien Chuang and fellow violinist Andrew Holmes performing Bach’s "Double Violin Concerto." Mendelssohn’s "Symphony No. 3," nicknamed the “Scottish,” also will be part of the performance, which is being conducted by Christopher Kelts.
Ticket prices range from $21 to $45 and can be purchased online at saintjosephsymphony.org. Children and student tickets are half price and can be purchased by calling 816-233-7701.
