ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) -- Volunteers are being asked to join an effort this weekend to clean up litter around the Downtown area.

The Beautify St. Joseph committee is partnering with Main Street St. Joe for the project. Those willing to help are asked to meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 29, at the concession stand building across from Coleman Hawkins Park Downtown for a group photo and instructions. Mayor John Josendale will make a proclamation declaring April "Litter Awareness Month."

Volunteers will cover a 12-block section from Faraon to Sylvanie and Third to Ninth streets. Each of six teams will take a two-square-block section with special attention paid to alleyways.

All equipment will be provided, including grabbers, gloves, trash bags and safety vests.

The group plans several cleanup efforts in April around St. Joseph.
