ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — City officials have announced that St. Joseph’s annual Clean Sweep event in April has been canceled amid efforts to reduce waste and ensure timely construction of the next cell.

The city is in the midst of an expedited $1.1 million cell excavation project to ensure enough landfill space is available when cell 7 — the current active cell — fills up in the coming months.

“In an effort to continue the reduction of tonnage into the landfill as work on cell 8 continues, we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel the April Clean Sweep event,” A Facebook post from the city read.

The next Clean Sweep event is tentatively scheduled for the first week of October.
