Dozens of Buchanan County residents sit in the Law Enforcement Center as St. Joseph Police give their introductory presentation for the Joint Citizens Academy.

Officers are inviting citizens of Buchanan County to get an up-close look at law enforcement as part of an evening training course beginning in March.

Applications are being accepted for the Joint Citizen’s Law Enforcement Academy through the St. Joseph Police Department and the Buchanan County Sheriff's Department.

This free academy will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday evenings for eight weeks from March 25 through May 20.

Participants will get an in-depth look and better understanding of the different skills and tools used by officers and deputies in their day-to-day operations to make the community safe.

Along with activities, guest speakers and demonstrators for various classes, those who attend also will have the opportunity to do ride-alongs with both the SJPD and the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office.

Participants must be at least 18, a Buchanan County citizen or business owner and willing to submit to a background check.

Those interested can contact SJPD Sergeant Jeremy Peters at 816-236-1473.

Applications will be accepted online at form.jotform.com/250125876072052 through March 23. Only 30 seats are available for the 2025 Academy.
