A 66-year-old St. Joseph man drowned over the weekend at Smithville Lake after diving in after a child who had drifted away from their boat.

An incident report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol shows that 66-year-old St. Joseph resident David Moore drowned at Crow’s Creek Cove at Smithville Lake on Saturday, Aug. 17.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. as Moore was loading children onto a 1999 Nova Runabout boat. As one of the children began to drift away, Moore dove in to get the child and never resurfaced.

Moore was later transported by Forensic Medical of Kansas to Forensic Medical.
