It seems that as soon as kennel space clears up, more dogs are on their way in, which is why the St. Joseph Animal Shelter has been working tirelessly to promote adoptions of dogs.

The shelter hosted an adoption special for dogs Wednesday, allowing people to take home a new furry friend for free.

All available dogs, including dogs in the Puppies for Parole Program, had waived adoption fees from 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., resulting in many dogs being adopted.

Stacey Kropf-Castillo has worked at the shelter for four years and she said that they do specials often, as they are always getting new animals in. While adopting is a great way to clear out shelter space, there are other ways to help out amid times of maximum capacity.

“You can always reach out about fostering,” Kropf-Castillo said. “You can always try to sponsor some of the adoption fees on petforu.com, and you can always reach out and see what kind of resources are available even if it’s fostering for a weekend just to get a dog out of here for a little bit, gives us more background on the dog.”

Elizabeth Driver adopted a dog with her family at the special event. Driver said she was grateful for the waived adoption fees, leading her family to find their new pet.

“Having these free days like this gives it a little bit more availability to people who don’t have the money, like, at that moment, and so it was just, kind of a Godsend for us, really,” Driver said.

The shelter will continue to host many more adoption events, continuing their efforts to find each animal their forever home.
