Hundreds participate in 4th annual Tulip Trot

Hundreds of St. Joseph residents braced the warmer temperatures Sunday afternoon to raise money and awareness for Parkinson’s Disease in the 4th annual Tulip Trot.
The event was in honor of National Parkinson’s Month and the end of National Parkinson’s Week. All of the proceeds raised in the 5k run and 1k walk raised funds to support the Freudenthal Center for Parkinson’s Disease.
The center, located in the East Hills Mall, helps the St. Joseph community battle the disease for free with regular exercise such as boxing, cycling and, of course, running.
The event and the Freudenthal Center raised awareness of the second most common neurocognitive disorder, following closely behind Alzheimer’s.
“If you have Parkinson’s or you know somebody has Parkinson’s, exercise is the best thing for Parkinson’s,” Executive Director for the Freudenthal Center, Stephanie Stewart said. “It’s the only thing the research has shown that may actually slow the progression of the disease.”
Over 200 people participated in this year’s Tulip Trot, one of the 5k’s all time highs.
