Buchanan County firefighters and troopers evacuated residents near Sugar Lake while crews battled a fire Thursday afternoon.

Troop H of the Missouri State Highway Patrol was notified about the grass fire at 1:46 p.m.

Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Puett said the fire was mostly under control Thursday evening, but drivers can expect to see both lanes of Missouri Route 45 south of Missouri Route 59 to Platte County closed through Friday morning.

“I think the road will probably be closed until the morning due to all the potential for flare-ups with hot spots,” he said. “Fire will be on scene most of the night.”

Puett said no residents were injured as of Thursday evening and one firefighter was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation.
