Freudenthal asking for valentines for seniors

Community members looking to spread the love this Valentine’s Day have the chance to make the holiday a little brighter for those in nursing homes and assisted living.
For the third year in a row, the clinic, located at 2425 N. Woodbine Road, is asking students, teachers and college arts programs to craft Valentine’s Day cards for elderly citizens across St. Joseph, Gower and Savannah who may feel lonely this time of year.
Last year, 75 classrooms throughout St. Joseph volunteered their time to make cards, ensuring those in nursing homes, independent living or assisted living had a valentine.
“A lot of time they feel like they’re forgotten,” said Maleah Hess, Freudenthal’s communications employee. “When they see a kid or a young adult take time out of their day to know that they thought about them on this special day, it really means a lot to them.”
Some elderly citizens in the area may not have friends or family to celebrate with. These cards help them realize they still have people who love and care for them.
“A lot of them have lost their loved ones and they don’t have someone to celebrate Valentine’s Day with,” Hess said. “But I believe Valentine’s Day is a day of love, not just for spouses or relationships, but in general.”
Valentine’s Day cards can be delivered to Freudenthal Hospice at 2425 N. Woodbine Road, or the clinic can be contacted at (816) 676-8050. To possibly receive a letter or card back, please provide contact information or a return address on the valentine.
