Emergency vehicles converged at Charles and 18th streets after a call came in for heavy smoke coming from a home.

The call came in just after 12:30 p.m. Firefighters tore down a portion of a fence leading to the back of the home, where additional heavy smoke could be seen. The smoke was cleared from the home by 1:30 p.m.

A man was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, according to St. Joseph fire inspector Loren Crum.

Crum said the scene is still under investigation and did not comment any further.
