St. Joseph is experiencing historically cold temperatures this weekend.

With wind chills expected in the negative double digits, being outside for any period of time is a significant risk.

In the midst of this, the Red Cross has offered some tips on keeping residents and property safe.

One of the biggest concerns is with cars. The Red Cross recommends making sure fuel tanks are full, as fuel can freeze in cold weather. It’s also important to have certain items in vehicles, including sand for traction, an ice scraper and warm clothes and accessories.

Pipes are also vulnerable when it comes to cold weather. Letting water drip through faucets can help prevent freezing.

However the biggest piece of advice is to stay indoors if at all possible. If you do need to go outside, be sure to wear multiple layers, scarfs, hats and gloves to protect as much of yourself as possible. This weather is not going away just yet and trying to brave the elements is not worth it.
