Ahead of their registration starting in March, the Creative Arts Productions camp hosted a make-and-take event at Nesting Goods for kids.

Every summer, the camp gets together starting in March and kids prepare for a play that gets performed at the Missouri Theatre at the end of July. This year’s play will be Lion King Jr.

It’s not uncommon to pick well-known productions, as the past couple year’s have seen versions of Peter Pan, Wizard of Oz and Moana.

“Year by year, we just kind of look at what’s available and we try to think what the kids might be interested in and also what would interest audience members,” said Denise Meyer, president of the camp.

The camp is open to kids from third grade to seniors in high school. The target number is typically around 50 kids signing up.

“We usually are very good about the different age variances,” Meyer said. “Some years we’ll have a lot of younger kids, but we make it work. The director is really good about working with them and getting them to do what they need to do.”

The July play is the only one put on through the camp in a year. However, the organization is always trying to reach out to children in the St. Joseph area.

“What we’re doing is just promoting the upcoming theater camp that we’ve got,” Meyer said. “Registration will open on March 1. This is just one of the many outreaches that we do to try to get kids interested in joining our camp.”
