Grabbing a cup of coffee from The Human Bean meant a little more this Friday.

The drive-thru coffee stand at 4414 Commons Dr. served food and drinks to benefit local breast cancer patients with Coffee for a Cure, its annual partnership effort with Mosaic Life Care.

It’s a day where 100% of sales and tips from The Human Bean go to the Mosaic Life Care Auxiliary Breast Cancer Patient Assistance Fund, with Mosaic matching the proceeds.

“We’ve grown every single year,” Mosaic Senior Marketing Consultant Jennifer Archdekin said. “Last year was the biggest year and we this year will be bigger (and) that we just keep growing.”

Coffee for a Cure generated a record $18,129 last year, which amounted to $36,259 after Mosaic’s match. The patient assistance fund helps cancer patients in many phases of their treatment.

“People get early treatment, they help people get through treatment and they help people after treatment,” plastic surgeon Jonathan Amspacher said. “It makes a big difference to the local community.

Amspacher said breast cancer is easier to treat and cure with early detection, so he stressed the importance of screenings.

“I think the most important thing is if you haven’t had your mammogram, make sure, if you’re 40 or over, that you get your yearly mammogram because (with) breast cancer, the real key is early treatment,” he said.

One of The Human Bean’s drive-thru customers was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022. She never had to use the patient assistance fund, but she is always willing to donate to the cause.

“The cost of medications is high, cost of living is high now, and some people can’t afford to make it just on a daily, let alone having a horrible disease,” Stacey Sharp said.

Anyone interested in helping donate to the Mosaic Life Care Auxiliary Breast Cancer Patient Assistance Fund can make a purchase at The Human Bean until 7:30 p.m. Friday night.
