Patee Market Health Center to see renovations through ARPA funds

The St. Joseph Health Department could potentially see roof renovations thanks to American Rescue Plan Act ARPA funds.
“This building was completed in 1909, so it’s a 115 year old facility,” said Kendra Bundy, the assistant health director at the health department. “Just over time, as things age or as wear and tear occurs, and of course, we live in the Midwest, so we experience the gamut of weather.”
Bundy said the start of the project is going to be weather dependent after the bill passes through the city council.
When passed, $101,400 will be transferred from the ARPA funds to the General Fund Health Department Program.
The roof renovations will include the replacement of the flat roof, guttering and the reconnection of the downspout.
Some other projects the health department will see in 2026, will be due to the new animal shelter location on south Belt highway.
With new sidewalks, a parking lot and doors those are just three projects listed on the city’s 2024 Capital Improvement Program schedule.
“As far as the project for the new animal shelter, we’re just in the very early design stages,” said Bundy. “But we know we’re going to need to renovate the existing parking lot that’s on the structure, replace the sidewalks, expand the sidewalks and make those suitable into code.”
City council will make a decision on the initial bill to replace the roof of Patee Market during its meeting on Monday, Nov. 25.
The bill is being introduced because the roof at Patee Market leaks during inclement weather.
