St. Joseph’s animal control and rescue shelter will see new hours of operation starting in August, the St. Joseph Health Department announced Wednesday.

The shelter currently runs Monday through Saturday, closing anywhere between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. depending on the day.

Starting Aug. 18, the shelter will now be open to the public Tuesday through Sunday from 1 to 5:30 p.m.

Health department and shelter staff are hopeful the updated hours will boost opportunities for the public to visit and utilize services.

Officials are optimistic that being open on Sundays in the future will increase volunteer engagement and support from the Friends of the Shelter group.
