Missouri will be one step closer to choosing its Republican presidential nominee as each county in the state holds its local caucus on Saturday.

Buchanan County Caucus-goers will gather at the County Courthouse at 41Jules St. on March 2, and it will take place inside the Division courtroom, where doors will open at 9 a.m. Children will not be allowed inside, and food and drinks will be prohibited.

Some people have already pre-registered for the event, but anyone who hasn’t can register at the courthouse starting at 8:30 a.m. The courthouse doors will close at 10 a.m.

We are going to discuss the three candidates left for the presidency, according to those who filed their fee in the state of Missouri: Donald Trump, Nikki Haley and David Stuckenberg, said Steven Greiert, chair of the Buchanan County Republican Central Committee. “And we will have at most two ballots. On the first ballot, if one candidate gets 50% plus one of the votes, that person will get all the delegates and alternates from Buchanan County.”

Anyone who is a resident of Buchanan County, a registered voter and a Republican can vote in the caucus.

“It isn’t that we’re trying to deny them the right to vote,” he said. “They have their own organization, their own caucus.”

The Buchanan County Democratic presidential caucus will be held on March 23.

The Republican presidential caucus will last no longer than 2 p.m. It will give them time to tally the votes and report to the state Republican party by 5 p.m.

“Because Missouri wants to be relevant, we’re ahead of Super Tuesday by three days,” he said. “And so, when we planned this, we wanted to have this date established. Nationally, they will know what the vote is in Missouri by Saturday night.”

Greiert started putting the caucus together in May, which he said has been hard work.

“We’re trying to organize people, have various assignments and everything, trying to get the word out to various people,” he said.
