Lincoln set to receive ‘wintery weather’ Monday evening, snow possible

By SHEL RICKERT – Lincoln Journal Star, Neb. (TNS)

Lincolnites might finally see snow at the very end of the year.

According to the National Weather Service, the city, as well as a large portion of the state, is set to receive “wintery weather” Monday evening into Tuesday morning.

Forecasters said rain is likely during daytime hours Monday, transitioning to snow in the late afternoon. While snow is possible across most of Nebraska, forecasts of “up to 1 inch” are limited to the northeastern part of the state.

Exact snowfall amounts are in question due to the timing of incoming cold air and ground temperatures.

Mike Moritz, Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Hastings, said there is a potential for heavier snow and slush west of Lincoln, near York.

According to information provided by the weather service, minor travel impacts could be seen along and north of Interstate 80, but also along and east of Highway 183. Increased winds have the potential to cause visibility concerns.

If Monday sees a measurable amount of snow, this could be the latest “first snowfall (after summer)” in Lincoln since Dec. 31, 2006, according to the weather service’s data archives. Last year’s “first snowfall” occurred on Nov. 25, 2023.

The city is also currently in a record snow drought. The last measurable snowfall occurred on Jan. 18. As of Dec. 29, that earmarks 346 calendar days snow-free. The previous record was set in 2012, when Lincoln went without snow for 309 days.
