16-year-old boy dies of injuries from ‘car surfing’ incident in Lexington

By Lincoln Journal Star, Neb. (TNS)

A 16-year-old boy has died from injuries he sustained Sunday night while “car surfing,” according to the Lexington Police Department.

In a news release, Chief Paul Schwarz said that at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Lexington officers were called about a young man lying in the street on the north edge of town.

He said officers found the boy and immediately rendered emergency medical aid until rescue workers could get there.

He was taken to the hospital in Lexington and later flown to a hospital in Kearney, where he died Monday.

Schwarz said police investigators learned the boy had been “car surfing” with two other boys: a 13-year-old and 14-year-old. He said the 16-year-old boy was lying on the hood with the car driving when the 14-year-old driver braked, causing the older teen to fall backward and hit his head on the concrete street.

Schwarz hasn’t yet released the 16-year-old’s name, and he said the investigation is ongoing.

Lexington is a city of about 11,000 people about 35 miles west of Kearney.
