Dec. 27—Milford Lake in Geary County has tallied 1.25 million visitors in 2024, officials announced Thursday.

They said that number solidifies Milford Lake’s position as one of the state’s premier tourist attractions, drawing visitors from across the region and beyond.

“We are thrilled to witness the incredible impact Milford Lake has had on our community, region and the state of Kansas in 2024. Though our visitation numbers are down from the previous year, we are still attracting over 1 million visitors per year,” said Rick Dykstra, marketing specialist for Geary County CVB, in a written statement. “The lake’s diverse offerings, from fishing and boating to camping and hiking, continue to resonate with visitors seeking outdoor recreation and unforgettable experiences.”

The influx of visitors to Milford Lake in 2024 has not only boosted local tourism but also generated substantial economic benefits for the surrounding region.

Officials said some factors contributing to Milford Lake’s success include a wide range of activities, such as boating, fishing, swimming, camping, hiking and birdwatching. Milford Lake is known for its fishing opportunities, attracting anglers from far and wide. The new Spray Park in Milford State Park has been a big draw for families.

Mike Harris, owner of Acorns Resort, said 2024 was a good year for his business.

“We welcomed guests from 24 states, and all enjoyed a wide range of activities and accommodations,” he said.

Milford Lake is the largest lake in Kansas and known as the Fishing Capital of Kansas. The lake is just a few miles from I-70 and next to Kansas Highway 77.
