Waterloo Public Library announces events for the month of January

WATERLOO — The Waterloo Public Library has announced its January events.
The library will be closed Jan. 1 for New Year’s and Jan. 20 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Events are as followed:
* 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday: A screening of “Despicable Me 4” will be shown for family movie night. Popcorn and drinks will also be available. The movie will be held in Meeting Room AB.
* 10 a.m. to noon Friday: A screening of “White Bird” will be shown, with popcorn and soda provided. It will be held in Meeting Room AB.
* 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday: Lego Lab will be held with the theme of making your favorite book character. Legos will be provided. It will be held in Meeting Room AB.
* 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 7: Iowa author Linda McCann will discuss her book “Prohibition in Eastern Iowa.” The event will be held in Meeting Room A.
* 9:30-10:30 a.m. Jan. 8: A Q&A class will cover computer basics including interfacing, Windows, files, apps, emails and more. Registration is required by visiting waterloopubliclibrary.org/event/tech-class-computer-basics-9751. The class will be held in the conference room.
* 5:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 8: A knitting and crocheting drop-in will take place at the Hive. Different patterns and supplies will be provided but you are welcome to bring any materials you wish to use. A staff member will be available to help anyone who needs support.
* 6-7 p.m. Jan. 13: The Well Read Book Club will meet virtually to discuss “Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop” by Hwang Bo-Reum. To participate, email Nolan at nrochford@waterloopubliclibrary.org at least one day before the event.
* 4-5 p.m. Jan. 14: The teen Manga club will meet in the library’s teen department.
* 5:30-7 p.m. Jan. 14: A drop-in crafting session will be held in the Hive. Any and all portable crafts using library-safe materials are welcome. A variety of materials will also be available for use.
* 9:30-10:30 a.m. Jan. 15: A tech help drop-in session will be held in the conference room.
* 5:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 15: Participants will learn how to create a resume as part of a job prep series. Information about work history is needed for the workshop. Registration is required at waterloopubliclibrary.org/event/job-prep-series-9869.
* 4-4:45 p.m. Jan. 17: To celebrate National Soup Month, preschoolers can read the classic folktale “Stone Soup,” along with other soup-related stories. A soup-themed craft will follow. The story time will be held in the Storytime Room.
* 3-4 p.m. Jan. 19: A youth STEM lab for youth and families will be held every third Sunday of the month from January through May. It will take place in Meeting Room AB.
* 6:30-7:15 p.m. Jan. 21: Fourth through sixth graders will discuss “The Secret Letters” by Margaret Peterson-Haddix as part of the Battle of the Books Book Club. The session will also have themed art projects, activities and snacks. Registration is encouraged but not required. Call the youth department at (319) 287-3976 with any questions.
* 9:30-10:30 a.m. Jan. 22: A Q&A class will be held for technology questions regarding Apple products. Registration is required at waterloopubliclibrary.org/event/tech-class-apple-basics-9752.
* 5:30-7 p.m. Jan. 22: A job prep class will discuss how to search for jobs online. Registration is required at waterloopubliclibrary.org/event/job-prep-series-9870.
* 5:30-7 p.m. Jan. 23: The Altered Reality Book Club will meet at Doughy Joey’s, 300 W. Fourth St., to discuss “Seraphina” by Rachel Hartman. To participate, email Sarah at ssellers@waterloopubliclibrary.org.
* 5:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 24: Games of laser tag will be held for teens on the library’s second floor. Pizza and snacks will be provided. Registration is required at tinyurl.com/WPLLaserTagTeen and limited to 40 participants. Print and return the waiver to the youth department by Jan. 23.
* 5-7:30 p.m. Jan. 27: The movie “Spirited Away” will be shown as part of the Teen Studio Ghibli Movie Night. Popcorn and pop will be provided and the event will be held in Meeting Room AB.
* 6-7:30 p.m. Jan. 28: A family board game night will be held in Meeting Room AB.
* 9:30-10:30 a.m. Jan. 29: A tech help drop-in session will be held in the conference room.
* 5:30-7 p.m. Jan. 29: An interview preparation course will be offered as part of the job prep series. Participants will practice answering common questions that may be asked in interviews. Registration is required at waterloopubliclibrary.org/event/job-prep-series-9871.
* 5:30-7 p.m. Jan. 30: An arts and crafts supply swap will be held in Meeting Room AB. Some examples of supplies includes canvases, paints, fabric, beads, writing utensils, yarn, clay and paper. Materials not accepted include broken or dried-out supplies, solvents or toxic chemicals, any AV equipment, sewing machines, lumber and home repair supplies.
