Temperatures expected to drop below freezing on New Year’s Day

By DAVID HOTLE – Muscatine Journal, Iowa (TNS)

While no snow is predicted in the area through New Years Day, temperatures are going to begin trending downward, according to the National Weather Service at the Quad Cities Airport.

Meteorologist Zach Uttech said that temperatures would begin to decrease next week.

Temperatures Saturday through Monday look to be in the mid-to-upper 40s, according to the forecast outlook on the National Weather Service website. Temperatures will begin to dip back in the high 30’s New Years Eve Day and to the mid-20s New Years Eve night.

Temperatures are expected to be below freezing beginning on New Years Day.

“The big change is the colder temperatures that kind of get ushered in with the New Year,” he said. “On New Years Day, we’re back to slightly below freezing. By Jan. 2, we will be in the upper 20s.”

He said this is a significant pattern change, and the colder temperatures will remain for some time.

Rain also will be passing through the area and is expected to bring about three quarters of an inch of rain through Saturday, Uttech said.

“It’s not a big system but beneficial rain considering we have been pretty dry going back into the fall and the first part of the winter,” he said.

The next chance for rain is predicted for Monday evening into Tuesday morning, according to the NWS QC website.
