Firefighters rescue family and dog from roof of burning home in Oelwein

OELWEIN — Firefighters rescued an Oelwein family from the roof of their burning house early Monday.
Crews also saved two dogs, but the family’s cats perished in the blaze, according to the city’s police department.
The fire apparently started in the kitchen of the Third Avenue Southeast home shortly before 1:45 a.m., and when firefighters arrived they found the residents and one dog on the back of the roof.

Rescue crews used oxygen to resuscitate a dog pulled from a burning home on Third Avenue Southeast in Oelwein on Monday.
A second dog was pulled from the burning home, and emergency workers were able to resuscitate the dog with oxygen, according to officials.
Hazleton firefighters were called to assist the Oelwein Fire Department.
The fire was limited to the kitchen, but the rest of the home suffered heat and smoke damage. Authorities said the cause of the fire appears to be accidental.
