One of the state's top nonprofit organizations is lending a helping hand to grow the St. Joseph Museums' humanities education program.

The MHC awarded a grant of $25,000 to the St. Joseph Museums on Wednesday, Feb. 26, to support a new project titled "St. Joseph, MO - An American (HIS)tory, (HER)story, (OUR)story."

According to the St. Joseph Museums, the MHC is the only statewide agency devoted to humanities education and has served as the state's affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities since 1971.

The St. Joseph Museums is focusing the grant toward interior renovations at the Wyeth-Tootle Mansion, located at 1100 Charles Street. Funds from the grant have been earmarked for the creation of museum exhibits that "explore the history of St. Joseph, MO through the topics of humanities, focusing on industry, philanthropy, gender and the arts."

St. Joseph Museums also plans to include discussions about the women from the Wyeth-Tootle families and various businesses throughout St. Joseph to introduce the community to the City's history and role in the development of the American West. Additionally, the Museums hope to instill a sense of community identity and create a space for further educational opportunities.

The other rooms being renovated within the Wyeth-Tootle Mansion will be used for wedding parties in areas that "showcase the luxury and history of the building," totaling six rooms and including patching, repainting walls, stabilizing floors, creating a new restroom and installing the exhibits.

For more information about the renovations at the Wyeth-Tootle Mansion contact the St. Joseph Museums at sjm@stjosephmuseums.org or call 816-232-8471.
