The Republican candidate for lieutenant governor for Missouri visited St. Joseph on Tuesday to talk about his campaign goals.

David Wasinger, a native Missourian from the St. Louis area, said his campaign is focused on empowering smaller businesses and taking power away from corporate lobbyists in Jefferson City.

“We’re going to be looking out for the folks in St. Joseph who live on Main Street, work on Main Street,” Wasinger said, “and not for the lobbyists and special interests in Jefferson City.”

When asked about the emphasis on small business for Missouri Republicans, Wasinger said there has been a change in the GOP under former President Donald Trump’s leadership.

“I think the Republican Party has morphed under President Trump into a party that’s looking out more for the working man, rather than the Chamber of Commerce big business types,” Wasinger said.

Wasinger said he also has a plan for the main areas of responsibility and oversight for the lieutenant governor’s office. They include senior adults, military veterans, crime reduction to boost tourism and senior adult concerns in the state.

“So my goal is to move good, conservative legislation across the finish line,” Wasinger said. “This has not been done effectively over the last few years, even though we have a supermajority in the legislature.”

Wasinger is a graduate of the University of Missouri and of Vanderbilt Law School. He will face Democratic challenger Richard Brown of Kansas City on the Nov. 5 ballot.
