Voters are heading to the polls to cast their ballots on local issues and statewide races.

Buchanan County Clerk Mary Baack-Garvey said election turnout is at 14.1% as of 3 p.m. in the 2024 primary election. In the 2020 primaries, Buchanan County saw 28.16% voter turnout. Turnout was at 6.8% as of 11 a.m.

In St. Joseph, voters will decide on Proposition S to raise teacher salaries, an extension of the city’s use tax, and a new judge for Division 3 of the Fifth Judicial Circuit.

Statewide primaries will narrow down the choices for candidates for governor, lieutenant governor, and secretary of state.

Nationally, a Democrat will be chosen to face Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., in November, and both Democratic and Republican primaries will be held for the U.S. District 6 representative.
