ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — The St. Joseph School District Board of Education gathered for its March meeting on Monday night.

Numerous recognitions were in store for those in the district during the meeting, including congratulations for the Benton boys and girls basketball teams taking second place in their state competition over the weekend.

Other recognitions consist of applauding Triumph Foods’ donation of $25,000 to the ELD department and recognizing Board of Education recognition month.

The March Board of Education meeting saw a large audience wanting to voice their opinions about moving from a three high school model to a two-high school model, with Benton as a middle school.

“I completely understand the sentiment, okay, but the plan is already made,” said LaTonya Williams, SJSD Board of Education president.

In a campaign video posted by the Friends of SJSD ‘24, numerous SJSD students, staff and supporters voiced their opinions on new buildings.

“In all honesty, it’s what we’re doing it for...It’s the kids,” said Williams. “The kids, from what I’m hearing, are overwhelmingly in favor of a new high school.”

Another item worth noting was attendance rates in SJSD are now above pre-pandemic levels.

“If you look at it, I mean, I know we’re kind of stagnant or we dip and we come back,” said Williams. “It’s improved over Covid...It is improvement and we need to acknowledge that and appreciate that.”

The Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, April 14 at the Troester Media Center to discuss Board Reorganization after Election Day and have it’s monthly work session.
