A historic St. Joseph home is looking to expand its impact through education and innovation.

Since 1885, the Shakespeare Chateau Inn has been a landmark in St. Joseph. With its large collection of 19th Century stained glass and accommodations, current owner Isobel McGowan is partnering with the new Shakespeare Chateau Guild to increase both preservation and education throughout the area. Guild member Lisa Rock said this partnership will become a model for other historic landmarks in the city.

“The Guild is wanting to purchase the Shakespeare Chateau from Isobel,” Rock said. “We want to start some educational training that will include teaching people how to work on historic structures, from window replacement to masonry.”

Guild member Craig Ritchie said that these new educational avenues will build upon the successful business model already in place.

“The house really is a fully functioning bed and breakfast that has guests from all over the world,” Ritchie said.

According to current owner McGowan, the money generated from the bed and breakfast, along with income from hosting weddings and parties, puts the nonprofit Chateau in a unique position.

“The house generates sufficient income to supports its own needs, and then some,” McGowan said. “This will allow the Guild extra funds to use for training, education and other preservation projects affecting historic homes.”

McGowan added that she believes this model can become “a beacon in St. Joseph” for preservation. Just as William Shakespeare made a lasting impact on English language and literature, the Shakespeare Chateau Guild wants to impact the way St. Joseph landmarks engage in education and preservation.

“This model can show how preservation can generate economic vitality and economic prosperity in our city,” McGowan said.
