School board candidate forum nears

By Marcus Clem
The League of Women Voters of Northwest Missouri has invited the 10 candidates for St. Joseph Board of Education to a Thursday public forum.
The event, set to begin at 6 p.m. on the upper floor of the Rolling Hills Library at 1906 N. Belt Highway, is the second big gathering of candidates for a discussion of the issues. Voters will choose three of them for the open seats on April 2.
The league is hosting the event with co-sponsorship from several other nonprofit organizations, including the Missouri Western State University Foundation, the St. Joseph NAACP, the St. Joseph Retired School Personnel Association, as well as the YMCA and YWCA of St. Joseph.
There is no entry fee to attend, and light refreshments will be served. It is not yet known if all 10 candidates will attend, but those on the ballot are Warren Ingram III, Sean Connors, Ronda Chesney, LaTonya Williams, Mike Moore, Jacob McMillian, Steven Carrillo, Kimberly Dragoo, Tami Pasley and Kenneth Reeder.
Those registered can vote for up to three of the candidates, though they will be permitted to choose one or two if they prefer.
After the closure of polls on the night of April 2, total votes for each candidate will be tallied and the top three vote-getters will earn a seat on the school board for three years.
First-time voters and anyone who has moved to a new residence since the last time they voted must be registered to vote by 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, to cast a ballot on April 2.
