Update: The Suspect, 36-year-old Bryson McCray of St. Joseph, has died from injuries following a police shooting over the weekend in Atchison.

Multiple shots were fired at an Atchison Police vehicle during a 9-hour armed standoff Friday evening, January 24, that came to an end early Saturday.

According to Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson, Atchison Police responded to 508 North 9th Street around 5:45 Friday evening, January 24, following a report of a person with a gun.

The suspect, identified by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation as 36-year-old Bryson McCray of St. Joseph, allegedly fired shots at an Atchison Police officer who was the first to arrive at the scene.

Additional officers arrived on the scene, securing the perimeter and learning that a female, known to the armed suspect, was being held hostage inside the apartment the suspect fled to after the shots were fired.

Special Response Teams from Atchison Police, the Kansas Highway Patrol, and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation responded to the scene.

At 2:30 a.m., the standoff came to an end, and officers were able to get the female hostage safely out of the residence.

According to Wilson, McCray was shot during the incident and was transported to Amberwell Atchison and then transported to a Kansas City hospital for treatment of his injuries. McCray died from his injuries at a local hospital early Monday morning.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation.
