'The Shop' bringing doughnut-coffee business to King Hill Avenue

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — St. Joseph has a new local business serving up a high-quality combo of doughnuts and coffee in the heart of the south end.

The Shop, a new doughnut and coffee business located at 6400 King Hill Ave., is set to open for business this weekend, offering residents everything from long johns to lattes.

With expertise in the worlds of coffee and doughnuts, store owner/head baker Paige O’Callaghan and co-owner/head barista Zoe Stephens, two longtime businesswomen, are eager to offer the ever-popular breakfast items in new areas of the community.

“It’s the perfect marriage,” Stephens said with a smile. “There is not a local shop in town right now that is offering the full spread of doughnuts and the full spread of coffee, especially specialty coffee. It’s really exciting to put those two together.”

Interested customers are encouraged to check out The Shop’s Facebook page for up-to-date information on this weekend’s soft opening.

The new business — which sports a modern interior look with a green-and-yellow color theme — will be open from 5 to 11:30 a.m. seven days a week and is designed as a convenient grab-and-go type shop, according to O’Callaghan.

The King Hill Avenue spot is just the beginning for the new venture. The pair intend to open a second shop on St. Joseph Avenue in the coming months, filling another void up north and providing additional space for coffee/doughnut production.

“We just thought that tapping those markets would be great and those areas of town deserve something good,” Stephens said. “We’ll have the same offerings as far as the doughnuts ... Maybe we’ll have the possibility of doing some afternoon hours.”

Customers at The Shop will see a diverse menu with a range of doughnut selections — available in singles and boxes — including specialty items like apple, cherry and peach fritters.

The other side of the menu includes an array of classic and special coffee selections, including espresso-based drinks like cappuccinos, macchiatos and americanos.

“We’re using specialty coffee that is regionally local from Kansas. We’ll have lattes and black coffee and house-made syrups and just a really great menu,” Stephens said. “I have a high standard for myself in the way that I do things, especially if I’m going to give it to somebody else.”

She and O’Callaghan have spent years honing their craft while working in other local businesses, acquiring a loyal base of customers along the way.

Now, the two area natives are thrilled to show what they can do in their own setting after serving the community for the last 16 years.

“We’re both really excited for the opportunity to shine on our own,” she said.

The business intends to offer online ordering for quick and convenient pickup and delivery in the future.
