Save money, energy when hosting for the holidays

If you’re entertaining or hosting family for the holidays, doing so can sometimes raise your energy bill.
Evergy came up with a list of ways to save a few extra bucks this holiday season.
“We try to offer tips to help people not only be energy efficient but can also save them some money this time of year when they’re decorating for the holidays,” said Courtney Lewis, the senior communications manager at Evergy.
Lewis said when cooking and entertaining, not opening the oven often, using smaller appliances when possible and turning the thermostat down a few degrees can make all the difference.
Additionally, using LED lights when decorating is more energy efficient compared to traditional incandescent lights. LED lights also last longer.
When it comes to lights, Lewis also said using a timer helps save energy usage.
“You can make sure they’re off when you’re not home,” Lewis said. “Even if you don’t want them to be on even if you are home. It’s really a great way that you can control energy usage in your home through those holiday lights.”
Lewis also said when you go to sleep, so should your lights. Doing so can save you money, prevent fire hazards and keep your home safe.
“We’ve all seen ‘Christmas Vacation’ or ‘Christmas Story,’ there’s lights where the sockets are overloaded. It could blow a fuse and start a fire,” Lewis said. “Don’t connect more than three strings of lights on any of the Christmas lights. Look for certification labels on any holiday lights you use.”
With candle usage for decorations, Lewis said battery-operated versions are safer as well.
When it comes to gift giving, Lewis said to keep an eye out for Energy Star certification. The sticker on the products you buy means those products meet the criteria for energy efficiency.
