It was below freezing on Friday morning, but that didn’t stop shoppers from heading out to find the best deals.

Many stores were open before the sun was out, bringing in the most dedicated bargain shoppers.

Lots of people make Black Friday shopping a tradition, including Sloan Ridpath.

“We come out every year for it and we always end up standing in line to get like the free deals and all the discounts and stuff,” Ridpath said. “But this is whenever my stepmom’s sister buys me Christmas presents and stuff.”

Online shopping has become more popular every year, but some people still prefer to do their shopping in person.

Ridpath shared why they decided to shop in person as opposed to online.

“I think it’s because they have a lot of good in-person deals and like stuff that you can’t buy online,” Ridpath said. “And also, it’s just, it’s fun for the experience, you know. Getting the Black Friday experience of the chaoticness of the holidays.”

Whether shopping in person or online, it is important to stay safe. Make sure to remain aware of your surroundings and keep personal items close. It is also recommended to not shop alone.

When shopping online, make sure you are using reliable websites and not using public Wi-Fi in order to keep your card information safe.

Frank Till with the St. Joseph Safety Council also recommended to stick with one payment method as you shop, as it can be easier to cancel a single card than several if security is breached.
