A new Midtown restaurant is bringing Chinese and Mexican flavors under one roof.

Moshu Shi Mama began serving Mexican food to customers at 2302 Mitchell Ave. a couple of weeks ago, but it began to fully live up to its Chimex title on Saturday when it started offering Chinese dishes.

Co-owner Ivan Perez said he and his father were inspired to open the restaurant because of a lack of food options in the area.

“Just to bring to the community something different to eat down here in this part of town,” he said. “You have pizza up the street, but (we have) different items, different food for people to try out as well.”

Holy Cow Creamery and a Dairy Queen once operated out of the building. Perez said it took about a year to open the restaurant as they worked to set up the kitchen and gain the required permits from the city to operate.

“It took a while, but we got there, so we’re finally open and we’re thankful for that,” he said.

Business was slow initially because people had not realized the restaurant was open, but signs on the building and near the street are helping to spread the word.

It was a moment months in the making for Jeff Jacobs as he pulled in to grab lunch on Tuesday.

“I’ve been waiting on it and that’s been, gosh, I think it was maybe last summer,” he said. “I came in and took pictures of the menu waiting for them to get here.”

Jacobs ordered Mexican food for his first visit, and he made sure to order a dish that could satisfy a spicy palate.

“I’m going with Mexican today,” he said. “I want my nose to run, my hairline to sweat and my eyes to water. That’s how hot I like it.”

Perez said the best part of the business is being open and welcoming customers to the restaurant.

“Hopefully people come out and try it out,” he said. “We’re excited.”
