New candle shop introduces Downtown to new scents

The smell of jasmine and lavender wafts through 1201 Frederick Ave.
It’s owner Karyn Morrow’s White No. 3 candle burning on the counter at Clean Alchemy, which opened its doors Friday morning.
“We’re a nontoxic home fragrance company, so things like phthalates and parabens, gross chemical compounds won’t be found in any of our products — nothing in our fragrance oils,” she said. “We’re 100% soy wax.”
Candles, wax melts and diffusers are listed for sale on Clean Alchemy’s website, but a larger selection of items can be found in the shop. Morrow tends to fall in love with each new item she releases.
“I think every new one is my new favorite — every new baby that I have,” she said. “Our best sellers are the Black No. 7, the Green No. 28, and the Purple No. 6 (signature candles).
Black No. 7 includes amber and sandalwood scents, Green No. 28 includes lychee and magnolia scents, and Purple No. 6 includes peony and starfruit scents.
Clean Alchemy has been in business for about two years, but it operated at a wholesale level, selling to other boutiques.
“We’ve just expanded so much that we’re able to open this now,” Morrow said. “This is a beautiful space and when I walked in, I knew that it was the one.”
Morrow said curious visitors attempted to visit the store earlier in the week, not realizing the store had not opened yet. She attributed her recent success to her support system.
“I’m very grateful for all the support of everybody that I know that’s really been cheering me on and supporting me over the last couple of years,” she said. “Having a beautiful retail space definitely helps, and I’m just excited to see what happens next.”
