A local company is expanding its business with the acquisition of an Iowa facility.

Van-Am Tool & Engineering, a St. Joseph metal machining and fabricator, has purchased the Fabrication Division of GMT Manufacturing in Waverly, Iowa. Company officials say additional fabrication and machining capacity is needed due to increased production demand.

The newly acquired facility will be known as Van-Am Defense Systems and add 75,000 square feet of manufacturing space. It will focus on heavy fabrications for the defense and industrial sectors.

“We are excited to add to the Van-Am portfolio of companies,” Van-Am CEO Keith Mills said. “This acquisition allows us to add capacity, support larger products and broadens our customer base.”

Van-Am, started in 1981, provides tooling, stamping, machining and fabrication services to customers throughout the Midwest. It also has laser cutting, press braking, robotic welding, powder coat and wet paint solutions, and offers design and build services for projects.
