Delzeit, Gregory J. 1952-2025 Highland, Kan.

HIGHLAND, Kan. – Gregory John Delzeit, 73, of Highland, Kansas passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at the Wathena Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Greg was born on March 9, 1952, in Hiawatha, Kansas, to Francis and Nadine (Richter) Delzeit.
He graduated from Wathena, Kansas, High School in 1970. Greg then attended Highland Community College and played defensive end for the Scottie football team in 1970-1971. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays State University in Health, Physical Education and Recreation and Social Studies. Greg also completed his master’s degree in Secondary Administration at Northwest Missouri State University. Greg taught and coached high school football, basketball and track at Gorham, Kansas, (1975-1976), South Harrison, Missouri (1976-1978), Centralia, Missouri (1978-1979), and Horton, Kansas, (1980-1981). In 1982, Greg was hired as Defensive Coordinator for the Highland Scottie football program where he served 23 years. During those first 23 years of service to HCC, Greg also served two seasons as the Head Track Coach and three years as the Intramural Director while also teaching and advising as a member of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Faculty. In 1996, Greg earned the title of Assistant Head Coach. In 2004 Greg became the Athletic Director for Highland Community College, where he served until his retirement in 2016. In 2008 Greg received the Bryce Roderick Award for outstanding service to the Kansas Jayhawk Conference and Region VI. Greg served on the HCC Alumni Board and was a former city council member in Highland. He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, in Hiawatha.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include, siblings, Mary Fagerquist (Larry) and Doris Delzeit; nephew, Charlie Fagerquist (Bethanie); nieces, Jodi Francis (Jeff) and Jill Morrison (John); many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral Mass: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 26, 2025, at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wathena, Kansas.
Rosary: 5:30 p.m. Friday evening at the Harman-Rohde Funeral Home, in Wathena, with visitation to follow until 8 p.m. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wathena. Memorials: NEK Hospice or the Greg Delzeit Athletic Scholarship Fund.
