Bill Tyer, 77, St. Joseph, passed away Friday, April 11, 2025. He was born Aug. 11, 1947, in St. Joseph to Marks and Thelma (Norris) Tyer. He grew up in Gower, Missouri, where he was named an All-State tackle for Gower High School, from which he graduated. Bill attended St. Joseph Junior College for two years before transferring to the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and marketing.

Bill worked in the insurance industry most of his life, later owning his own agency in Raytown, Missouri, for many years before retiring and relocating to St. Joseph.

In his early years, Bill enjoyed bowling with his wife, Sharon, in league play. He loved to golf and putter around with his tools in the garage or yard. An outgoing guy, Bill loved to talk to people and loved to play cards at the monthly “Poker Club” meeting with his friends.

Above all else, family meant a lot to Bill. He enjoyed spending time with his son and grandchildren, especially talking about football. He was immensely proud of their achievements and creativity.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Averil Janette Dunlap; and nephew, Pat Dunlap.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Sharon; son, Ryan Tyer (Becky); twin grandchildren, Anna and Ian Tyer; sister, Marcia Porter (Glen); nieces and nephews, Angela Sanborn (Barry), Mindy Porter, and William Dunlap, Brenda Hawkins Dunlap, and Tim Dunlap; numerous other extended family members and friends.

Graveside Farewell Services and Interment 10 a.m. Friday, Mount Zion Cemetery, Gower. The family will gather with friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Mount Zion Cemetery, c/o Gary House, 6422 NW Highway K, Gower, MO 64454.
