Lions, Golden Eagles make run in wood bat tourney

The first of two weekends in the Walkoff Wood Bat Tournament saw two local schools go the distance in their respective brackets.
On Saturday, both St. Joseph Christian and Bishop LeBlond were able to punch their tickets to championship matchups, only for both teams to come up just short.
In the semifinals of the blue division, St. Joseph Christian was able to easily coast past Sioux Falls Christian, a team from South Dakota, by a score of 10-0. The Lions came out of the gates strong by scoring four runs in the first inning. The Lions, a Class 2 team, would then look to take the momentum of a shutout victory into the championship game of the blue division against Class 3 West Platte. The Blue Jays were able to score runs at a much more consistent pace and leave the Lions in a lengthy scoring drought between the first and seventh innings, propelling themselves to a 6-2 win to take the blue division of the high school wood bat tournament.
In the white division of the WOW Wood Bat Tournament, Bishop LeBlond won its first two matchups by an average of almost 13 runs. Like the Lions, the momentum wouldn’t carry over into the championship game for the Golden Eagles. Facing the C team of Platte County, LeBlond would watch its two-game win streak snapped, losing 7-2.
The Walkoff Wood Bat Tournament will continue into next week beginning on April 18, which will include four separate brackets that feature even more local teams such as Savannah, Mid-Buchanan, Benton, Central and East Buchanan.
