Construction ramps up on new Maple Leaf Skatepark as opening nears

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Construction is underway on Maple Leaf Parkway at St. Joseph’s first true skateboard park, putting the much-anticipated facility one step closer to reality for the local skateboarding community.

Crews with skatepark specialist Spohn Ranch have been ramping up excavation work for the $450,000 facility at 1942 Mapleleaf Boulevard this week, with concrete pouring and construction of park features next in line.

Contractors are hopeful to have construction complete in roughly two months, putting the facility on track to potentially open in May or June.

The skatepark design includes a modern concrete layout with terrain that accommodates all skill levels and riding styles. It features a below-grade bowl, a mini half-pipe section and several street elements including rails, ledges and pads.

Funds were added to include spectator seating, a quarter-pipe ramp in the southwest corner and a pathway connecting the sidewalk to the new park for ADA access. Money for the project comes from the 2019 voter-approved Capital Improvements Program tax.

Once complete, the new and advanced skatepark will mark a significant upgrade from smaller skatepark features located at Bode Sports Complex and Hyde Park.
