School board talks salary schedules early learning center boundaries and CSIP

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) -- The St. Joseph School Board discussed salary preparations for the upcoming school year and new Early Learning Center boundaries.
Proposed salary schedules for the 2025-2026 school year where discussed before heading to the agenda to be approved or denied by the School Board on Monday, March 24.
The schedules are reflective to a $500 increase to the teacher base and a 1.7% increase to the schedules not indexed to the teacher base.
When it comes to "off-duty" positions teachers can take part in, SJSD Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources said, typically, other district's expect teachers to volunteer their time.
"The things on this salary table are hard to find. Yeah. You know, like teacher salaries. Everybody's got that us to try to center these things you have to dig for. And quite honestly, some districts, expect the teachers just to volunteer their time for that."
The Board also talked about boundary options for the Early Learning Centers, as more space is needed for children wanting to attend preschool.
The district is adding additional ADA classrooms to Lake Early Learning Center, as Lake is the only place where there is room to add.
Due to lack of space, the district has been bussing kids from Mark Twain Early Learning Center to Lake.
The new proposed boundary suggests preschool kids who are set to attend Pershing Elementary School, would go to Lake, as opposed to Mark Twain.
"Just over the overflow, I mean, if you look at the numbers of each of the early learning buildings as they are now, it's full," said LaTonya Williams, SJSD School Board President.
Williams said there's a lot of kids on the waiting list to get into the SJSD preschools.
The board also received an update on the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP) in terms of the graduation profile.
The district is looking to implement it's 'Portrait of a Graduate', which provides a different lens for the district to think through and update it's mission, values and vision.
The next Board of Education meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, March 24 at the Troester Media Center.
